Justice Department Allegations Against Sheriff Arpaio: Vengeance for His “Birther” Activity?
In September 2011, Sheriff Joe Arpaio, head of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) in Arizona, announced that he would initiate a Cold Case Posse investigation into Barack Obama’s presidential eligibility. He appointed 5 law enforcement experts to the case and they reportedly have produced hundreds of pages of documents and have taken testimony from dozens of experts in preparation for a final phase of field investigation.
About a week ago, Arpaio announced that he would be releasing a preliminary report on Obama’s eligibility in February 2012. That report, he claimed, would be controversial and he also confirmed that the Obama investigation has broadened beyond an examination of whether or not the birth certificate made public by the White House on April 27 is an authentic document. The probe, he said, is examining Obama’s history in regard to his eligibility to be president under Article 2, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution.
Reportedly, Arpaio has been receiving numerous death threats due to his decision to investigate Obama’s eligibility. One such threat, issued soon after his statement about the preliminary report ominously stated, “I plan to kill Joe Arpaio first… He will be filled with a thousand bullet holes before the year is out. I promise you this – Arpaio won’t **** with Obama.”
In addition, ever since Arpaio made the announcement about the eligibility investigation, an apparently coordinated effort was initiated to force Arpaio to resign from the MCSO. According to World Net Daily:
-In recent days, the group that led the recall effort against former Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce – the legislature credited with passing Arizona’s tough immigration law, SB1070 –has announced its intentions to target Arpaio for electoral defeat in 2012.
-Randy Parraz, president of Citizens for a Better Arizona, has begun pressing the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, a group that has budgetary authority over Arpaio, to pass a resolution that calls for Arpaio to resign.
-In another attack that has arisen since Arpaio announced his decision to charge his Cold Case Posse with investigating Obama’s eligibility, the Associated Press recently republished an old allegation that Arpaio’s office had botched more than 400 sex crimes in the city of El Mirage, a suburb of Phoenix where the police force was disbanded in 2005.
Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Justice issued a scathing report against Arpaio and the MCSO, alleging that the “most egregious racial profiling in the United States” was committed by Arpaio’s office in its efforts to enforce illegal immigration laws. The report further alleges that Arpaio’s office held a pattern of “systematic disregard for the basic Constitutional protections” amid a series of immigration crackdowns.
The Justice Department report has prompted the Department of Homeland Security to cut ties with Arpaio and the Sheriff’s office. According to a report by KSAZ Channel 10 in Phoenix, this will end an agreement that allows the MCSO to enforce immigration law and puts millions of dollars of federal aid to Arizona at risk.
Arpaio has been given 60 days to initiate reform and the DOJ has written that it prefers voluntary compliance by the MCSO.
Looks like Sheriff Joe will be very busy in the next few months. He may even be forced to defend himself against resignation. Throws a little cold water on his Cold Case Posse eligibility investigation. Don’t ya think?
It may even despoil the Birther Summit planned for March 2012.
